Brompton Westbrook Primary School

On the edge of an army housing estate in Brompton, Gillingham. 40% of pupils come from service families. School has close links with nearby Royal School of Military Engineers and the Gurkhas. There is a high level of churn as families move from posting to posting. Pupils who do not speak English as a first language.

In response, the dedicated staff have developed a successful teaching style involving small groups, 1-to-1s and close engagement with the community. The new expansion works are designed to enhance the school’s ability to build upon these core principles.

Extending the original Kent County Architects’ buildings, our aim was to take standard materials and methods of construction and put them together in a way that is carefully thought out and a little less ordinary.

I'll say how we have been able to meet community need with the new, self-contained hall (as well as this helping sustain budget through income generation). That the children have benefitted from the new classrooms and the increase in roll has helped to meet local need for school places. How the design has complemented our teaching style to meet the needs of our high pupil mobility (i.e. with lots of small spaces to provide group and 1-1 intervention) and how this in turn has ensured that, during a time of assessment, instability and change, our results continue to improve.

I can say how proud we are of the new design and how visitors comment on how nice the building looks.
